Unit history

Formed in early March 1862, the 50th served in the defenses of Savannah until ordered to join the Army of Northern Virginia (ANV) at Richmond in July. They were at Second Manassas (30 August), before the Maryland Campaign.

On the Sharpsburg Campaign

The 50th was assigned to help defend Fox's Gap on South Mountain on September 14th, and took heavy losses there. The remant of the regiment, probably about 100 men, defended the lower (later Burnside's) Bridge on the Antietam on the 16th and 17th. They were also engaged at Shepherdstown in stopping Federal pursuit on the 20th.

After the Sharpsburg Campaign

The Regiment continued in service with the ANV for the duration of the War except for the Knoxville (TN) Campaign of Nov - Dec 1863 under General Longstreet.
