Unit history

Organized at Jackson during the summer of 1861 with five companies, later increased to six. Ordered to Virginia, the battalion was assigned to General Garland and Featherston's Brigades and by April 1862 totaled 360 men. It was prominent in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Sharpsburg.

After the Sharpsburg Campaign

In November 1862 additional companies joined the unit at Fredericksburg, VA, and it became the 48th Mississippi Regiment. The regiment surrendered 11 officers and 87 men at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.
