On the Sharpsburg Campaign

The regiment was part of General Jackson's command at the siege and capture of Harpers Ferry, VA and was fired upon there on 13-15 September 1862. They were in furious combat around the Dunker Church and in the West Woods at Sharpsburg on the 17th.

Battle historian Ezra Carman1 lists Lieutenant Colonel Samuel H. Walkup in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg, apparently in relief of Colonel Hill, but that's probably an error - or at least a misuse of the term "command." Hill was not wounded or ill, nor did he leave the field during the battle at Sharpsburg, or at any time in Maryland, so there was no transfer of command.

In his contemporaneous diary,2 Walkup noted that at one point that morning he rallied some of his fleeing men while Colonel Hill continued retreating with the rest, about 100 yards further; Colonel Hill and those men rejoining "after some 10 or 15 minutes." Walker is contemptuous of his Colonel's military ability and possibly bravery (as well as that of his brigade commander Walker and others), but does not say he took command at Sharpsburg.
