Unit history

Formed originally as the 9th Regiment, it was reorganized and renamed the 27th in September 1861. It had been recruited from Orange, Guilford, Wayne, Pitt, Lenoir, Perquimans, and Jones counties, North Carolina.

On the Sharpsburg Campaign

James A Graham, Co. G of the 27th, said of the Battle: "The day had been a long one, but the evening seemed longer; the sun seemed almost to go backwards, and it appeared as if night would never come."
