The Antietam Roster project

The number of people present on the Maryland Campaign of 1862 cannot be precisely known, but it was large. The armies' total mustering strength in the first week of September 1862 was about 150,000 (85,000 Federals and 65,000 Confederates), with at least 85,000 of them (51,536 and 32,851 respectively) engaged on September 17th at Sharpsburg. Adding in the Federal garrisons at Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry, along with local and detached units along the railroad and Potomac River, I think there were something like 160,000 soldiers present for at least some part of the Campaign.

I'd like to know all their names, and get them listed on Antietam on the Web (AotW). For the most part, I'm only going to be able to add names for those killed, wounded, missing, AWOL, or otherwise notable - or noted in a letter, diary, or unit history - in Maryland. The men who were there and did their duty, but didn't stand out in some way may never be represented in the Roster - sorry to say. We are up to 11,457 people, so far.

Our database includes commanders and staffs of Brigades and larger organizations, but the vast majority of Campaign participants were in units below the Brigade level. Regiments, Batteries and smaller units present on the Maryland Campaign of 1862 are listed below. After each unit name is the number of their members we have in the Antietam on the Web database. Click on the unit name to see more about them.

As always, if you know of individuals who can be documented as present on the Campaign, and we haven't yet listed them, please contact your webmaster, and I'll get them added.
