On the Sharpsburg Campaign

Colonel Cobb was home on leave during the Maryland campaign of 1862. Initially in command of the Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Lamar was mortally wounded at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September.

Lt Grier informs us that Cobb's brigade was bombarding Harpers Ferry at 11 o'clock on Sunday morning, when they were ordered to Cramptons Gap, seven miles, with all possible haste, and that they went at the double quick all the way, and found two regiments of Mahone's Brigade terribly pressed, by two divisions of the Yankee army - Slocum's and Smith's of Franklins corps. It was this tremendous force which this little handful of men under Cobb were ordered to hold in check, and they did it - though at the most unheard of sacrifice of life. These Yankees were marching to the relief of Harpers Ferry and would have relieved it before it surrendered the next morning, if they had not been checked exactly where they were and at the time.

Major Glenn was in command at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
